We P-P-Picked Up Our Penguin… Come and See It!

Just over a week ago, we attended the fund-raising auction for Maggie’s Centre featuring the penguins in Maggie’s Penguin Parade. You might have seen these beautifully-designed penguins on display in various locations around Dundee.

Now the Parade is over, but we’re pleased to announce that we won the auction for artist Yvonne Stewart’s “Korora-mantic” penguin. Not only does the money raised go to a good cause, but we also got our hands on a beautifully-designed piece of artwork. We took delivery of it at the weekend, so while the Penguin Parade has ended, the Korora-mantic has a new home on display in the window of our Dundee shop. Of course, you’re welcome to come in and get a better look at it if you so wish!

We’d love to find out where all the other penguins in the auction ended up- perhaps we should join with their owners and start a new Penguin Parade!

Earlier this year, The Courier looked at Yvonne’s creation of the Korora-mantic penguin, including how its creation was inspired by her own struggle with breast cancer ten years ago and what Maggies did for her, as well discussing World Penguin Day and the effects of climate change on them.

The description of Yvonne’s Korora-mantic piece from the auction catalogue is as follows:-

“Yvonne’s design is inspired by the Korora penguin, often called “the fairy penguin”. These birds are known for their strong family bond and determination to survive when faced with adversity. The design is upbeat but warns to pay attention to changes in your body. Hidden amongst the happy characters are two unsavoury creatures located at her right breast. Inspired by Yvonne’s own cancer journey and the support that the Maggie’s Centres provide, her design represents the emotional ‘Cancer Care’ journey that we all face at some stage in life, either affected by cancer or caring for someone with cancer.”

At the same time we were collecting our Korora-mantic penguin, we managed to get some snaps of the other seventy nine in storage awaiting their new owners.
