iPhone 7 Audio IC Disease Repair

Do you own an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus that’s over a year old? Have you had problems with it bending (even if you’re sure it wasn’t your fault)? There’s a problem you should know about that’s come up recently.

It’s known as “audio IC disease” or sometimes “loop disease”, and is due to a fault with the connections between the audio IC and the motherboard getting strained then broken when the phone twists or bends. (This is very similar to the problem that caused “touch disease” on the iPhone 6 series).

Symptoms include problems with audio during phone calls (either at your end of the other person’s end), Siri not responding to your phone, and either the voice memo or the loudspeaker icons being greyed out during calls. The phone can also take much longer than usual to boot (it gets stuck in a program loop waiting for the audio IC to respond before eventually giving up- hence “loop disease”).

For technical reasons we won’t bore you with here, some audio functionality (e.g. MP3 playback) might still work fine even if you’re having these problems. That’s common with audio IC disease.

The problem seems to get worse as the phone ages, most probably because of the accumulated effects of the strain, and- this is the nasty bit- only seems to appear after the year-long warranty has passed.
