iPhone 6 Diode Short Circuit Repair

Signs of damage with the diode knocked off and lying squint
The diode removed completely
Diode now in its correct position
Original Tristar IC with underfill being removed.

Another case where we managed to fix a repair another business had messed up! This is an Apple iPhone 6 we were sent by a company based in England, as it had a charging issue. Whenever a USB cable was plugged in, it said “accessory not supported”. Normally, this means that the cable being used isn’t MFI certified, but they’d assured us that they’d tried several genuine Apple cables.

When we received the iPhone 6, the first thing we tried was a genuine Apple cable. The company was right- it still gave the “accessory not supported” message and wouldn’t charge, so we removed the motherboard and inspected it under the microscope.

It was clear that someone had previously worked on it, because the metal shield protecting the ICs had been removed before. We could see a diode had been knocked off the board, causing a short on the 5V rail, and damaging the charging IC (Tristar). After we’d replaced the Tristar IC, and fitted the diode back in its correct position, this iPhone was once again in working order.

The iPhone 6 now in working order
